48 Hours: Nightmare in Idaho

Nightmare in Idaho - A Mother Accused

Paulette WelchOn September 7, 2001, CBS 48Hour aired an investigative episode entitled "A MOTHER ACCUSED" surrounding the death of 19-month old Stockton Welch of Idaho Springs, Idaho.

On the morning of May 1, 1999, the lives of Paulette and Kelly Welch were turned upside down when they rushed their son, Stockton, to an emergency room after he had fallen from a chair in their home. Emergency room physician, Dr. Jeff Keller, diagnosed Stockton with severe brain injury, immediately speculating the child's condition could not have been sustained in the manner the parents claimed. Instead he believed someone had violently shaken the child. Other doctors agreed with Dr. Keller in that this was a case of Shaken Baby Syndrome.

Before Stockton was taken into surgery hospital staff had called authorities, and the prosecution of his ultimate death began. Stockton died on the operating table, and soon after Paulette Welch was charged with first-degree murder.
